Poly V-Belt

The Earth India Company offers Poly-V Belts (Ribbed Belts) designed for efficient power transmission where compact drive dimensions, flexibility, high operating speeds and smooth performance are required. A Poly-V belt combines the flexibility of a flat belt with the gripping characteristics of a V-belt. Multiple longitudinal ribs engage with corresponding grooves in the pulley, providing a large contact area and effective power transmission within a compact belt profile. Available in different rib sections, numbers of ribs and belt lengths, Poly-V belts can be selected according to the power, speed and configuration of the drive system.

CORE COMPOUNDING

Engineered Rubber Compound + Longitudinal Ribs + High-Strength Tensile Cords

Product Profile

Overview & Engineering Design

Designed for Compact & Efficient Drives The thin cross-section and multiple longitudinal ribs allow Poly-V belts to bend easily around relatively small pulley diameters while maintaining effective contact with the pulley.

Technical Advantages

Core Product Features

High Power Transmission Capability

Multiple ribs provide effective contact between the belt and pulley.

Compact Drive Design

Suitable where limited installation space is available.

High Flexibility

Thin belt construction enables operation around relatively small pulley diameters.

Suitable for High-Speed Drives

Well suited to applications requiring smooth operation at elevated rotational speeds.

Smooth & Quiet Operation

Continuous rib engagement helps provide stable power transmission.

Good Load Distribution

Multiple ribs distribute the operating load across the width of the belt.

Low Maintenance

Requires no lubrication.

Wide Range of Sizes

Available with different rib profiles, belt lengths and numbers of ribs.

Product Structure

Poly-V Belt Construction

Poly-V belts combine several components to provide flexibility, strength and effective pulley engagement.

Ribbed Driving Surface

Multiple longitudinal V-shaped ribs run along the length of the belt and engage with corresponding grooves in the Poly-V pulley.

Tensile Cords

High-strength tensile members provide the required tensile strength and dimensional stability while controlling elongation during operation.

Rubber Compound

Engineered rubber compounds form the belt body and ribs, providing flexibility and supporting reliable power transmission.

Belt Back

The outer surface protects the internal construction and, depending on the drive configuration, may also interact with supporting or idler pulleys.

Comparison

Poly-V Belts vs Conventional V-Belts

Both belt types use friction to transmit power, but their construction and drive characteristics differ.

Poly-V Belts

Use multiple longitudinal ribs and have a relatively thin belt construction. They are particularly useful for compact, high-speed and multi-pulley drive arrangements.

Conventional V-Belts

Use an individual V-shaped cross-section and are widely used for general industrial power transmission, including many heavy-duty drive arrangements.

The appropriate belt should be selected according to the power requirement, pulley configuration, available space, operating speed and drive design.

Multi-Ribbed Design

Why Multiple Ribs?

Instead of using one large V-shaped section, a Poly-V belt uses multiple smaller longitudinal ribs. This provides a broad effective contact area while maintaining a thin and flexible belt construction.

Pulley Compatibility

Poly-V Belt & Pulley Compatibility

The Poly-V belt section must match the corresponding pulley rib profile. For example, a PJ belt should operate with a PJ-compatible pulley, while a PL belt requires the appropriate PL pulley geometry.

Correct matching is essential for proper rib engagement, load distribution and reliable belt performance.

Belt Profiles

Poly-V Belt Profiles

Poly-V belts are categorized according to their rib pitch and cross-sectional profile. Common industrial sections include:

PH Section (Very fine-pitch Poly-V profile for compact and light-duty drive arrangements)PJ Section (Fine-pitch ribbed profile commonly used in compact, flexible and relatively high-speed drive applications)PK Section (Larger rib profile used where greater power-transmission capability is required)PL Section (Larger industrial Poly-V section suitable for applications requiring increased power capacity)PM Section (Heavy Poly-V profile intended for higher-power industrial drive applications)

The appropriate section should always be matched with the corresponding Poly-V pulley profile.

Typical Use Cases

Typical Applications

Poly-V belts are commonly used in:

Industrial MachineryMachine ToolsFansBlowersPumpsCompressorsTextile MachineryProcessing EquipmentFitness EquipmentRoller DrivesMaterial Handling EquipmentGeneral High-Speed Power Transmission

The appropriate belt section and construction depend on the power-transmission requirements of the equipment.

Understanding Poly-V Belt Specifications

Poly-V belts are commonly identified using:

Number of RibsBelt Section / ProfileBelt Length

For example, 10 PL 2477 indicates 10 ribs, PL section, and a 2477 length designation. Similarly, 450 PJ indicates a PJ-section belt of length 450. The exact marking format can vary between manufacturers, so the complete existing marking should be provided when replacing.
